अंग्रेज हुक्मरानों की बढ़ती ज्यादतियों का विरोध करने के लिए महात्मा गांधी ने 1920 में एक अगस्त को असहयोग आंदोलन की शुरुआत की। आंदोलन के दौरान विद्यार्थियों ने सरकारी स्कूलों और कॉलेजों में जाना छोड़ दिया। वकीलों ने अदालतों का बहिष्कार कर दिया। कई कस्बों और नगरों में श्रमिक हड़ताल पर चले गए। सरकारी आंकड़ों के मुताबिक 1921 में 396 हड़तालें हुईं जिनमें छह लाख श्रमिक शामिल थे और इससे 70 लाख कार्य दिवसों का नुकसान हुआ।
शहरों से लेकर गांव देहात में इस आंदोलन का असर दिखाई देने लगा और सन 1857 के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के बाद असहयोग आंदोलन से पहली बार अंग्रेजी राज की नींव हिल गई। फरवरी 1922 में किसानों के एक समूह ने संयुक्त प्रांत के गोरखपुर जिले के चौरी-चौरा पुरवा में एक थाने पर आक्रमण कर उसमें आग लगा दी। हिंसा की इस घटना के बाद गांधी जी ने यह आंदोलन तत्काल वापस ले लिया।

2004 : श्रीलंका ने भारत को हराकर क्रिकेट का एशिया कप जीता।
2006 : जापान ने दुनिया की पहली भूकम्प पूर्व चेतावनी सेवा शुरू की।
2007 : वियतनाम के हनोई शहर में आयोजित अंतरराष्ट्रीय गणित ओलम्पियाड में भारतीय दल के छ: सदस्यों ने तीन रजत पदक जीते।
2021: बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी वीपी संधू ने चीन की जियाओ को हराकर तोक्यो ओलंपिक खेलों की महिला एकल स्पर्धा का कांस्य पदक जीता। ओलंपिक में दो पदक जीतने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला खिलाड़ी बनीं।
2021: भारत की पुरुष हॉकी टीम ने तोक्यो में ग्रेट ब्रिटेन को हरा कर 49 साल बाद ओलंपिक के सेमीफाइनल में जगह पाई।
